Seven things I saw this week

1. A man standing in the corner of a crowded train car, holding on with one hand and reading Crime and Punishment as people bumped into him on the way to the Loop.

 2. Seven tall wooden pepper mills, the kind that waiters wave over your salad, $2 each at a sidewalk sale blocks away from two recently shuttered restaurants in West Town.

 3. A cluster of boys in their prep school uniform shirts huddling under boulder-sized backpacks and smoking a joint behind the pizza place on Chicago Avenue during morning rush hour.

4. In the garden next to the Art Institute, during lunch, an older couple wandered next to the fountains. He was carrying a big Dunkin Donuts bag, posing sheepishly, as she directed him into a sunny spot to take his picture.

5. The tiny figures of men in orange jumpsuits playing basketball on the roof of the triangular federal prison downtown are the only human beings visible in the skyline.

 6. A big black dog with his leash tied to the bike rack outside of Atomix, waiting, panting and flopping his ears until his owner emerged with coffee.

 7. A young guy having lunch at the coffee shop with his family, leaning over to tease his much younger sister, who giggled into her sandwich.
